¡¡¡¡Air China Notification on the Control of SARS (April 16, 2003) By adhering to our business tenet of¡°Safety First and Passenger Uppermost¡±, Air China has been endeavoring to implement a series of measures to ensure a safe sanitary condition on all flights since early March in order to prevent possible infection of SARS on board. For the passengers¡¯better understanding of current situations and to fulfill their travel itineraries, Air China therefore publishes the notification as follows:
¡¡¡¡Air China has been attaching great concern to the control of SARS and has initiated immediate and effective measures in order to prevent the disease from occuring on Air China flights. By March 25, Air China has carried out the disinfections on all flights to Hong Kong. Since March 25, Air China has been doing daily disinfections and ventilation to all aircrafts when they fly back to Beijing Capital International Airport. The disinfections are done by means of wiping and spraying the aircrafts with the medicine approved by related Health Quarantine Organizations. Air China has distributed the preventative medicine and gauze masks to all crew members and enhanced their health inspections. None of them has been found infected by SARS till now.
¡¡¡¡Maintenance staff of Air China has strengthened the ventilation of all flights returning to Beijing Capital International Airport and ensured that the aircrafts be always ventilated while parking on airport. Meanwhile, Air China also puts more efforts on sanitary scrutiny of in-flight passenger catering and implements effective measures on its production and distribution process. Aviation Health Center of Air China has set up emergency medical team 24 hours on duty to deal with all related reports of in-bound and out-bound flights in a timely manner. All the airplanes of Air China are equipped with cabin air filtering system, which consists of highly effective particulate air filters and can prevent the spore, bacteria and virus from spreading in the cabin. During flight, air is circulated every three minutes and it means that the in-flight air will be refreshed 20 times per hour. There will be much less possibilities of being infected on board the commercial aircrafts than at any other places without ventilation.
¡¡¡¡By March 20, 2003, Air China has issued notifications to its business organizations around the world, especially those located in the Asian nations and regions requesting that every Air China station must strengthen the health scrutiny on passengers. For those passengers with obvious SARS symptoms, we would dissuade them from boarding the aircraft and immediately report it to the epidemic prevention departments in order to take immediate actions. For passengers who are going to take the flight of Air China, we strongly recommend that they should clearly understand their health conditions in advance. If suspected symptoms being identified, they should not purchase air tickets or board the aircrafts until they receive the doctors¡¯clearance ruling out SARS symptom. In line with the Joint Announcement made on April 12 by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Communications and the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China, Air China will strictly stick to the requirements and carry out preventative measures, including aircraft disinfections, assistance in identifying and isolating suspected victims, assistance in Epidemiological study and preventative knowledge publicity among people and etc. The possibility for the atypical pneumonia spreading through the transport channels should be completely eliminated.
¡¡¡¡According to public reports, since March of this year, the World Health Organization has sent officials and experts to China for several times and made joint efforts with the Ministry of Health and related departments to study and investigate the cause of SARS. The WHO experts highly praise the Chinese government for its effective measures. Currently the SARS infection in a small number of Chinese cities and areas has been under effective control. The incidents of SARS have significantly declined and the recovery rate has greatly increased. Experts believe that with good ventilation & filtering systems on board and strict disinfection measures taken by airlines, the possibility of being infected by SARS virus on board is quite lower. Air China has already implemented all relevant preventative measures in time and will certainly keep a close eye on the sanitary situation of the aircraft so as to ensure the cabin environment to be safe for travellers flying with Air China. Thank you for reading this notification and choosing Air China continually as your future travel needs. You may send an e-mail to publicr@mail.airchina.com.cn or call us at the phone number 64599048 (Chinese) or 64599063 (English) if you have questions on this issue. With the best regards (¹Ìɽ)
